Bio
If you were to splice together the musical DNA of The Buzzcocks, Regina Spector, and Kate Bush, the result would be the genre blurring sound of Lylyly. Formed by Philadelphia songwriter, Emily Mineo, Lylyly is a scrappy pop rock(DIY, Garage Rock) outfit unafraid to embrace their delicate vulnerability. Their songs range from powerful, guitar driven screamers to achingly soft and spacious ballads of loss and yearning. In each song it’s Mineo’s voice, whether stretched to its rasping limits or gliding, sweet and plaintive, that draws you in. Utilising a natural gift for melody and originality, the tunes are catchy and accessible but always with a dash of anti-folk quirkiness.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Mineo only needed to spend a short time performing in the close knit Philadelphia music scene before being recognised for her powerful and versatile voice, emotive lyrics, and commanding stage presence. This soon led to performances in prestigious Philadelphia venues such as The World Cafe Live and TLA. Mineo’s debut EP, (Jumping Fences, 2014), garnered glowing reviews from XPN’s “The Key” (link to Key article here) with a successful release show at The World Cafe Live’s downstairs stage.
The core and sometimes solo performing member of Lylyly, Mineo began playing with Josh Zenker (bass) in 2015 to begin developing the songs into their now larger sound. Kelvin Cochrane (guitar) and Jared Williams, (drums), became collaborators in 2017, in preparation for recording their upcoming release. Together, the ensemble adds an extra dimension to Lylyly’s songs, giving them the life, back bone and dynamic range they deserve. The live performance is raw, tight and energetic, fronted by Mineo’s infectious enthusiasm and joyful, humble charm. (Maybe mention gigs with people/bands here - Don Babylon, The Curls, Boy Wonder, Sophie Coran)
Lylyly’s first single, Undead, is set for a Halloween seasons release in October, 2018. Undead explores the struggle of coping with PTSD amid the distractions and pressures of modern society using the metaphor of zombies and haunted dreams. The power pop song with musical nods to the slasher horror movies of the ‘80’s is the eagerly anticipated first taste of an eclectic collection of 8 songs set for release in early 2019.
